Over the past eight years I would sit in various Chamber of Commerce meetings and would always hear the same story about business in the United States. The story, and fact, were that jobs were slow to grow, companies were not buying new technology or machinery, because they were unsure of what Obama was going to do next. The phrase was - business is on hold.
When business sees the government taking more control over their businesses they don't move forward, instead they fall back. And that is what happened in a nut shell in the Obama eight years. We in business just didn't trust Obama and his anti-business views. So, we paused, did not grow, and became very conservative with our business actions. We did not spend unless we had the money to spend - which was tough for small businesses.
Along comes Trump, a business person that showed what success was, very pro-business and less government. He started to roll back all the executive orders of Obama that had put business on pause for eight years. Wall Street was happy. Small business was happy. Jobs began to be filled that had laid stagnant for eight years. Red tape was being cut and businesses were happy. The optimism began to grow not just in business but also with consumer confidence. A leader was in charge and the country started to react positively. Instead of falling back we started to fall forward to do what business should do - grow.
When I hear the argument being made, even by Obama, that Obama started the growth, I see it as nonsense. The jobs that were created during the Obama reign were part time jobs, service level jobs, but nothing of substance. And it took eight long years of Obama to do anything, in fact it was when Trump was elected that business started to pop because business was relieved to see the anti-business Obama leaving. Obama for eight years put the country on hold - the pause button was pushed. Even the reset button on foreign affairs didn't work because it wasn't plugged in correctly to what the country wanted. They wanted common sense - not a political agenda that was failing.
I have said in my past podcasts that now was the best time to think about starting a business. Everyone is moving forward with positive attitude towards business. When you see growth, you build. So, as I have said before, now is the best time to build a business that has been in the back of your mind for a long time.
When the federal and state governments get too big they want more and more control over how you do business. They feel they are entitled to tell you what to do. Government builds their power base over the control they have over you and me. Bigger government - higher taxes and spending. Bigger government - businesses pause. California is in trouble now because they have raised their taxes so high that it is forcing companies to look at states that are business friendly. They always use the argument that California is the 6th in the world economy. However, they refuse to tell you the entire story. Home prices are too high for the average person to purchase. Rents are too high where a 300-square foot studio can cost $1,800 a month. Personal and corporate income taxes are highest in the nation. Gasoline taxes are also the highest in the nation and the gas fund is robbed to pay for other things in government. The poverty rate is at 20% and climbing. The state’s education system, K through 12th grade, is 10th from the bottom of all states. Crime is going up because the Governor has an early release program for criminals. The Center for Public Integrity gave the California Judicial system an "F". And the list goes on. Again, we see big government in control of California and it is hurting Californians, but they don't do anything about it. For the last eight years we have seen the same signs in our federal government. Over taxing, over spending, over regulations. Both political parties got out of control and the American people did nothing, until recently.
I encourage each of you, no matter where you live, to challenge what politicians are doing. Challenge them with sound arguments backed up with data. Don't present blog's or main stream media. Instead go out and look at the various think tanks that are looking at state and federal data on a consistent basis. Study the real data that is out there, not the data being spun by politicians.
